Equine-assisted therapy

Emerging evidence · high engagement

What it is

Ground work and relationship with horses, sometimes riding. Used as regulation, trust, and presence work — not a horse-riding lesson by itself.

Evidence

Open trials in veterans show PTSD score drops. Quality of evidence is still limited compared with PE/CPT/EMDR. Engagement is often high.

Access for veterans

PATH and Eagala barns, plus named veteran weeks (Heroes and Horses and others on Programs).

Cautions

Not first-line PTSD therapy. Confirm insurance, flying, and whether a licensed clinician is on the ground.

Evidence reviewed September 2026. Named sources are being added room by room; start with VA/DoD PTSD guideline (2023) for first-line care.
